SmithTyler Smith is aiming for a top-20 finish in a competitive field at the ITU World Triathlon Championships in Cozumel, Mexico, this week.

Smith and fellow Bermudian Erica Hawley will face the world’s best juniors in Friday’s race, looking to cap off a busy summer of competition and training.

Both athletes have spent time honing their skills in Victoria, British Columbia, and had seventh-place finishes at this month’s Canadian Junior Elite Series in Edmonton, Alberta.

Smith, 17, competed in the 16-19 junior men’s race and posted a time of 58min 11sec, just over a minute behind winner Pavlos Antoniades, of Canada, who crossed the line in 57:02.

Hawley, 18 and a freshman at Boulder University in Colorado, finished in 1:06:11 in the junior women’s race more than four minutes behind winner Desirae Ridenour, of Canada, in 1:01:57.

Coach RABurchBermuda Olympian Roy Allan Burch has been named as the Lake Norman Charter School Head Swim Coach.

“I was looking for jobs in the area in fields I was interested in and I came across the open Head Coach position at Lake Norman Charter, the school is near my house so it was perfect,” said Burch, who is now himself also back in Training.

Burch went on to say, “Once I sent in my resume they wanted to hire me.”

When asked what he plans to bring to the school, Burch said, “There is a lot I can bring to the table for the school. It's not an overly aggressive training schedule which made it a good fit for me.”

Duffy worldsCozumel will provide the backdrop for the final World Triathlon Series (WTS) race of the season this weekend when it hosts the 2016 World Triathlon Grand Final.

The race looms as a mouth-watering contest with the battle for the world title likely to come down to a matter of seconds.

In the red corner is the challenger Flora Duffy. The uber biker from Bermuda has had a career best season and sits at the top of the rankings. Finishing first or second here will guarantee her a maiden world title.

In the blue corner is the reigning world champion, Gwen Jorgensen. The American recently added the Olympic gold medal to her near perfect short course CV. She is looking to become the first woman to win three consecutive world titles. Should she do that, she would also join Emma Snowsill as the only athletes to have won three world titles and an Olympic gold medal.
