invitationalMore than 70 athletes will compete in the first Bermuda Invitational Permit Meet on Friday evening at the National Stadium.

The athletes will begin arriving today, eight this afternoon and six more on the evening flights from Miami and New York.

The Bermuda National Athletics Association is excited about the calibre of the athletes, including Jason Richardson, the world champion and Olympic silver medal winner in the 110 metres hurdles.

torchlightingThe flame for the Olympic Games in Brazil has been lit in southern Greece. An actor performing the role of high priestess lit the torch by using the sun's rays.

The torch will be taken by various runners on an international relay that will culminate at the opening ceremony in Rio de Janeiro on August 5th.

madelynmooreMadelyn Moore, the Bermuda swimmer, is knocking on the door to Olympic qualification.

The 15-year-old sprint swimmer came to within less than ½sec of qualifying for this summer’s Olympics in Rio after recording a 26:65 in the 50 metres freestyle, her speciality event, at the Central American and Caribbean Amateur Swimming Championships (CCCAN) in Barbados last summer en route to winning the gold medal.

Moore, who attends Warwick Academy, has two meets remaining to qualify for the Olympics and feels good about her chances of reaching the 50 free qualifying standard of 26:17

royallanburchRoy-Allan Burch remains upbeat about his chances of competing at this summer’s Olympics in Rio.

The SwimMac Carolina swimmer has made a miraculous recovery from a potential career-ending injury and will resume his quest to qualify for a third straight Olympics at next month’s Canadian Trials in Toronto.

It will be the first time that Burch has swam competitively since rupturing both his patella tendons after falling during a training session nearly a year ago.

The Olympic qualifying mark for the 50-metres freestyle event is 23.05 sec, which Burch feels is still within his reach.
